  1. That… Isn’t surprising? I mean that’s a lot of effort to beat a fingerprint sensor. It makes sense that a 3d finger print would work.. I mean it’s a 3d fingerprint

  2. A thief wouldn’t waste their time doing that. All they have to do is snatch your phone and hold you hostage and your thumb. Same with Face ID. They’ll just tilt your head to face the screen, tape your eyes so you don’t close them or just threaten you with shit so they don’t have to waste any tape. 😬 By the time they printed your thumb markings, you would have already reported your phone missing, locked your phone, and changed your credentials anyway.

  3. I always tell people that biometrics are not a replacement for passwords. Sure you can use them to identify a user and with 2 factor authentication, but using it directly as a password gives you a poor security. Biometrics are as strong as weak passwords. Face ID can be cloned too by using 3D printed skin mask.

In some states, now law enforcement cannot force you to use your biometrics to unlock your phone. But they can secretly do that and can lie about in court that it was already unlocked at the time of the arrest like « the suspect was already using his phone when we made the arrest ». Face ID is more vulnerable to this as it only requires to silently position your phone in front of your face when your eyes are open.

6-8 digit PIN is the strongest security.
